About GST (Goods and Services Tax)

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments. GST is based on the principle of "one nation, one tax" and has simplified the tax structure significantly.

GST Rate Structure in India:

0% GST: Essential items like milk, bread, vegetables

5% GST: Household necessities, sugar, tea, coffee

12% GST: Computers, processed food, medicines

18% GST: Most goods and services, soaps, toothpaste

28% GST: Luxury items, cars, tobacco, aerated drinks

Types of GST:

  1. CGST: Central Goods and Services Tax (collected by Central Government)
  2. SGST: State Goods and Services Tax (collected by State Government)
  3. IGST: Integrated Goods and Services Tax (for inter-state transactions)
  4. UTGST: Union Territory Goods and Services Tax (for Union Territories)

GST Registration

Mandatory: For businesses with annual turnover exceeding ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for special category states).

Voluntary: Businesses below the threshold can register voluntarily to claim input tax credit.

Composition Scheme: Available for small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crores.

GST has streamlined the tax system, reduced tax evasion, and created a unified national market in India.

GST Calculation Formulas

Adding GST (Tax Exclusive):

GST Amount = (Original Amount × GST Rate) / 100 Total Amount = Original Amount + GST Amount

Removing GST (Tax Inclusive):

Original Amount = Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate/100) GST Amount = Total Amount - Original Amount

GST Components

For intra-state transactions:

CGST = GST Amount / 2 SGST = GST Amount / 2

For inter-state transactions:

IGST = GST Amount

Input Tax Credit (ITC)

• Businesses can claim credit for GST paid on purchases

• ITC can be used to pay GST on sales

• Helps eliminate cascading effect of taxes

• Proper invoicing and documentation required
